The Asimptote software is professional software used worldwide by a large number of companies for the design and simulation of energy conversion systems, and by a large number of universities, both for education and for research. The software is however also very well suited for students. One can think of use for graduation and other projects at bachelor and master levels or assignments for groups of students and for research purposes of PhD students. As the software has originally been developed at universities the thermophysical relations used in the software are scientifically well-founded.
Self-study is also very well served by the Asimptote software if you are particularly interested in thermodynamics. A good textbook for this purpose is Thermodynamics, Fundamentals and Engineering Applications of late William C. Reynolds (Stanford University, USA) and Piero Colonna (Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands). Many images, tables, calculation examples, student assignments in this book have been made with or are to be used with the Asimptote FluidProp and Cycle-Tempo software.
Cycle-Tempo is used worldwide by a large number of students for graduation purposes and other assignments. They have used it to design and simulate various energy conversion systems, such as (organic) Rankine cycle power plants, gas turbine systems and power plants for combined power and heat, fuel cell systems, absorption-cooling and refrigeration systems, etc. The use of FluidProp is mainly found in various student projects for bachelor and master students to calculate thermodynamic properties of a wide variety of substances for various purposes. The free version of FluidProp has had several thousand downloads since its first upload. FluidProp is intended to be used in other software, such as Excel, Matlab, and Python.
